How to Measure a Tree

Two key measurements every tree inventory needs: trunk diameter (DBH) and crown diameter.

Diameter at Breast Height (DBH)

Wrap a measuring tape around the trunk at exactly 1.3 meters above the ground. If the tree grows on a slope, measure 1.3 m from the uphill side. Record the diameter in centimeters.

Crown Diameter

Find the widest point of the canopy and measure it end-to-end. Then measure again at a right angle. Record both values — North–South and East–West — in meters.
